Dr Ted Landsmark, is the subject of the Pulitzer Prize photograph taken by Boston Herald American photographer, Stanley Forman, depicting a brutal attack during an anti busing rally in Boston City Hall Plaza on April 5, 1976, the photograph went viral globally and became part of the American narrative and catalyst for social change.
The program opens with Landsmark's studies at Yale University, his civil rights activism, and then onto his influence with Walker Evans and his photographs from the 1930s while at the Farm Security Administration. The interview covers Louis P. Mazur’s book, The Soiling of Old Glory, originally published in 2008, with a second edition released in 2024, with Landsmark writing the introduction. We unpack Forman’s iconic photograph, talking about Judge Garrity’s order 50 years ago to desegregate the Boston Public Schools, and several other topics including what Ted Landsmark encountered while enroute to Boston City Hall, where he was attacked by white racist and anti busing students. Forman’s photograph touched so many people's lives, and shocked America.
